Leeds International Festival, now in its fourth year, will run from 30th April – 9th May 2020. The 2020 festival theme is Generation: Future, exploring, investigating and interrogating what Generation Future means, promoting thought, discussion and artistic interpretation.
Three international speaking events lead the programme of events. Future. Identity. Power: Reframing Equality and Justice will focus on some of the everyday and extraordinary struggles for justice , equality and diversity. Led by Leeds based educator Dr Shona Hunter, the event will see contributions from writer, professor and activist Lacy M Johnson, writer, speaker and spoken-word poet Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan, Editorial Director of Harvard Press Sharmila Sen, and interdisciplinary writer Jay Bernard.
TV presenter Micaela Strachan will chair A Generation to Cool the Earth which looks at food futures and how we can make impactful changes. The sessions will include talks from co-founder of Extinction Rebellion Roger Hallam, professional American musician and bioacoustician Bernie Krause, and global food activist and Indian scholar Dr Vandana Shiva.
Living in a Future City, which will feature television presenter and architect, George Clarke, and discuss how we can build the cities of tomorrow looking at everything from transport and the natural environment to urban infrastructure.
Other highlights will include anglo-german dancers, Requardt & Rosenberg’s, and the award-winning photographic artist Mandy Barker’s Altered Oceans, which looks at plastic pollution in our oceans.
