Youngsters from Leeds star on Chinese TV

Youngsters from Leeds have featured on Chinese TV after their remix of Chumbawamba’s iconic hit, Tubthumping, proved a hit in the Chinese City of Qingdao.

The remix of the 1990s classic, which was created by Breeze Leeds during the lockdown to lift spirits, was entered into a project being run by the Chinese city of Qingdao and the Chinese Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries which aimed to promote international spirit and cooperation during the Covid-19 crisis.

The organisers liked it so much that it was played on local TV channel, Qingdao TV. You can watch the clip here: http://www.qtvnews.com/mobile/qddst/qd/view/detailsData.html?id=193974&from=singlemessage

Breeze Event and Project Team Manager, Jason Tabor, said: “To hear that the piece has been played on Qingdao TV came as a surprise! But it shouldn’t really, it’s an inspiring piece of work capturing all that is great about Leeds as a city; from our deep sporting heritage across a vibrant city centre and our amazing parks and green spaces performed by talented and inspirational young people at a difficult time around the world it is amazing.

Everyone who has seen the work has been impressed and we are proud of what has been achieved and the vision and hard work of former Breeze Manager, Sally Coe to bring the piece to life.

There are strong links between the Leeds City Region and Qingdao, notably through Bradford and Qingdao’s status as UNESCO Cities of Film, which has seen Bradford City of Film open an office in the Chinese city. A delegation from the Leeds City Region also travelled to Qingdao last year to meet with top tech firms such as Hisense to further promote links and trade and investment opportunities between the city regions.
