This week, Leeds welcomed a powerful cultural collaboration between the University of Leeds and the Hangzhou Opera and Dance Theatre from Leeds’ partner city of Hangzhou, China.

Brought together by the University’s School of Performance and Cultural Industries, the Confucius Institute, and the International Office, the programme offered a vibrant celebration of the long-standing Leeds–Hangzhou partnership, showcasing the strength of cultural exchange between the two cities.

The centrepiece of the visit was a performance of To Meet the Grand Canal, accompanied by a documentary on the touring production and a series of panel discussions exploring the artistic, cultural and logistical dimensions of the work. These discussions brought together University of Leeds academics, President Cui Wei, and members of the touring company, offering valuable insight into both the creative process and the international collaboration behind the production.

To Meet the Grand Canal tells the story of a single drop of water travelling through Hangzhou’s historic Grand Canal, highlighting the growing environmental pressures on the canal’s ecosystem. Through a compelling blend of dance, music and storytelling, the performance illustrates the impact of pollution on wildlife and plant life, while calling for collective responsibility in protecting this vital cultural and environmental asset.

The performers spoke passionately about their role in conveying this message, emphasising the importance of raising awareness of environmental sustainability and safeguarding Hangzhou’s rich “canal culture” for future generations.

The tour was brought to Leeds and the UK by the China National Tourist Office in London, with support from the Chinese Consulate in Manchester. The event was officially opened by Education Counsellor Liang Yan, underscoring the importance of cultural diplomacy and educational exchange in strengthening UK–China relations.
