This week at MIPIM, Leeds City Council, working together with the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership, brought together a panel of European civic leaders and developers to discuss how planning can have a significant impact on city and regional economic development.
The panel, which included Leader of Leeds City Council, Cllr Judith Blake, and representatives from our partner cities of Lille and Dortmund, explored the impact of high speed rail networks and regeneration of urban communities.
Both Lille and Dortmund have enjoyed successful redevelopment of their city centres, with city centre urban living a key feature in both cities.
The Lord Mayor of Dortmund and General Manager at Euralille (high speed railway and urban quarter in the centre of Lille) discussed what lessons could be learned from Lille and Dortmund’s experience in how Leeds is approaching the £500 million Leeds integrated station masterplan and Southbank development.
Commenting on the day Councillor Judith Blake said: “This a moment of great opportunity for Leeds and I am delighted that we will continue to share best practice and learning with our partners in Lille and Dortmund for the benefit of the communities we serve.
“The plans we have for the development of the Southbank and the integrated station masterplan form part of our long term vision to create a strong economy in a compassionate community.”
The panel formed part of Leeds’ wider participation at MIPIM, a major international property event, where Leeds is promoting the strength, success and ambition of the city and the wider region.
Leeds shares strong links with its partner cities Dortmund and Lille and 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of civic partnership with the city of Dortmund.
