How can culture help cities respond to climate change, strengthen communities and build a more sustainable future? This is a question being explored by cities across Europe, and Leeds is helping to shape the answer.

As a signatory to the Eurocities Lille Call to Action for Sustainable and Inclusive Culture, Leeds is working with partners across the continent to share experience, exchange ideas and learn from innovative approaches in other cities. Three Leeds projects have recently been featured on the Cities for Sustainable Culture platform, showcasing how culture can contribute to environmental sustainability, inclusion and community resilience.

Cultural Anchors driving change

Leeds' major cultural organisations are more than venues and arts providers. They are key partners in delivering social, economic and environmental benefits across the city.

The Cultural Anchors programme demonstrates how organisations such as Northern Ballet, Opera North and Leeds Playhouse are using their influence, expertise and reach to advance sustainability goals. By embedding environmental responsibility into their operations and long-term planning, they are showing how the cultural sector can contribute to wider city priorities while delivering cultural excellence.

Building a sustainable cultural sector

Sustainable change requires collaboration, and Leeds' approach has attracted attention across Europe. SAIL (Sustainable Arts in Leeds) supports cultural organisations to reduce their environmental impact and embed sustainable practices in their day-to-day work. Through training, peer learning and initiatives such as the Resource Hub, organisations can share and reuse materials, reduce waste and develop greener ways of working.

The programme demonstrates how a city can drive environmental action not only through individual projects, but by strengthening the cultural sector as a whole.

Connecting culture, climate and communities

Leeds is also exploring how culture can help people engage with the climate agenda in meaningful and accessible ways. Seasons of Culture brings together creative activity, green spaces and community participation. Through projects taking place across the city, residents are encouraged to connect with nature, local places and one another while exploring issues such as biodiversity, wellbeing and environmental sustainability. By combining climate action with culture and inclusion, the programme highlights the important role creativity can play in building more resilient communities.

Learning and sharing across Europe

Culture has a vital role to play in creating sustainable cities. As Leeds works with partners through the Eurocities network, it both contributes to and benefits from a growing exchange of ideas and good practice. At a time when cities are facing shared challenges, from climate change to inequality, partnership and knowledge exchange are more important than ever. The inclusion of these projects on the Cities for Sustainable Culture platform reflects the strength of Leeds' cultural sector and provides an opportunity to share local experience with an international audience.
