This month saw Leeds launch a city working group on Children and Young People which will bring together major cities from across Europe to share ideas and best practice to help improve the lives and outcomes of children living in our cities.
The working group, which forms part of the European city network EUROCITIES with Leeds appointed as the official chair, was launched online earlier this month and saw over 30 cities, including Madrid, Vienna and Amsterdam, come together to discuss the group’s plans and objectives for the coming year.
Key areas of focus include mitigating the impact for children living in poverty, reducing the number of children in public care and improving children and young people’s health and well-being.
Another important area of discussion during the launch meeting was around the support and care provided to children during the recent Coronavirus crisis.
Commenting on the launch of the working group Leeds City Council’s Chief Officer for Partnerships & Health (Children and Family Services), and Chair of the working group, Sue Rumbold, said: “It was fantastic to get the working group up and running. Working with and learning from European partners will help support our aspiration in Leeds to create a Child Friendly city, where we give children the best possible start in life and to improve outcomes for all.
“As chair of the working group, we also have a unique opportunity to promote Leeds’ Child Friendly work across Europe and shape wider polices which impact the lives of children and young people with an emphasis on the voice of the child being at the heart of everything we do.”
